2016 June Pender Post
The recycling depot is now operating on summer hours, from June until the end of September. Our hours are Tuesdays 8am - 3pm, Fridays and Saturdays 10am - 3pm and Sundays 1 - 4pm. The ReCycle Community Bike Shop is now open and in full swing, with Ken Marshall as our bike mechanic. He will be on-site every Sunday afternoon from 1 - 4pm. Ken will also offer bike repair workshops this summer to help us non-mechanics learn how to maintain and repair our own bikes. Dates, times and cost are yet to be determined, so please check at the depot, on our website or Facebook page for announcements. You could also leave your name and contact info with staff if you are interested in taking part.
We were saddened to hear that long-time friend of PIRS Peter Kearvell passed away on May 6. Peter was in his early nineties yet he was still coming to do his recycling at the depot until last month. He was an avid supporter of the Pender Islands Recycling Society and was also one of the depot’s earliest volunteers. In more recent years he was known to join us on occasion at our staff party/Christmas dinner. You may notice that we have Peter’s old mailbox displayed at the depot (with his name on it) which he donated to us so it could become our suggestion box. His support of our environment and our recycling depot will always be much appreciated.
The expanded and remodelled ReShop is now fully open with different and interesting items changing hands all the time. Promoting re-use in its various forms is one of our core activities and the reason for expanding the ReShop. It is good for our environment to allow usable items to have a second life instead of ending up in a landfill prematurely. We enjoy seeing all the creative uses people come up with and we appreciate all the donations to the FreeStore and ReShop.
If you have been at the depot lately you have likely noticed our new “Priority Parking/Mobility Issues” parking spot. We try to keep this spot reserved for community members who have mobility issues and would appreciate having a parking spot close by. We encourage anyone with mobility issues to also ask depot staff members for assistance.
If you are a part-time resident of Pender or just haven't gotten around to renewing your PIRS membership yet please know that we very much appreciate your annual renewals which help us stay in operation. Memberships can be renewed for $20 either online at www.penderislandrecycling.com or by seeing a staff member at the depot. Charitable tax donation receipts are available upon request. We wish you a happy June and would like to encourage creativity and re-use for gifts for Father’s Day on June 19th!
