2017 October Pender Post

This month is all about giving thanks.

The Pender Islands Recycling Society, board of directors and recycling depot staff, would like to extend our thanks to Pender Islands community members for their patience and understanding during the past few months. It was a very busy summer. Recycling depot members and guests were asked to wait: until we found you a parking spot, until we emptied overflowing bins, until we had time to answer your individual questions. Thanks so much for kindly tolerating these delays.

We would also like to offer thanks, and congratulations, to all of you who entered the Recycling/Reuse category of the 2017 Pender Islands Fall Fair. As always, the entries were impressive: Grace Parker’s Reusing Old Clothes project won the Karl Hamson Recycling Trophy for Best Overall Submission; the Group of Seven (Katie Cooper, Sadie Lucas, Ripley Stafford, Tija Cooper, Nadi Cooper, Nuala Stafford and Meredith Boyd) won first prize for their Miniature Village entry; Sarah Nelson won second prize for "Belle Pou Belle" ("Beautiful Rubbish"), a brown Papier-Måché Gown with plastic bag and aluminum foil details; and third prize was won by Mathew Ohnona for his Mosaic & Mirror creation.

Returning Recycling/Reuse category Judge, Joseph Montague, struggled to select the winning entries from the numerous imaginative submissions. Thanks Joseph for another fine job. You can see the winning entries and others at: penderislandrecycling.com

And we can’t forget to thank: Nu-To-Yu for supplying the Imagination Station with a whole bunch of “nu-to-us” t-shirts that were in turn made into t-shirt bags by fair attendees; Elizabeth Scalice for the amazing job she did making centrepieces for the beer garden and BBQ dinner tables, reusing old teapots and other things, and turning several old bikes and pairs of rubber boots into beautiful decorative pieces that brightened the fairgrounds; and Angie Bowns for her gorgeous flowers arrangements topping the table centerpieces, bikes and boots. Check them all out at: penderislandrecycling.com

Our thanks also go out to all of you who used our backhaul service in the past, and thus far in 2017. The money generated from this service really helps our financial picture. If you are still in need of yard or road supplies before the winter rains set in, please let us know; we have some delivery dates open in October and November. Our 21-foot dump truck can haul: 3 yards of gravel, or 6 yards of soil, or 9 yards of bark mulch. The cost of our delivery service is $130 (North Pender) and $150 (South Pender), plus the value of material we haul to your property. For more information or to book a backhaul date, please speak with a recycling depot staff member or call the depot (250.629.6962).

Finally: Thanks for remembering NOT to load up your vehicle with recyclables to bring to the recycling depot on Fridays. We are now CLOSED ON FRIDAYS. Winter Hours (October 2017 thru May 2018): Tues – 8-3, Sat – 10-3, Sun – 1-4.

We wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving.
