2016 May Pender Post

The month of May is here, which at the depot means that it is Tire Collection Month. We will be accepting all types and sizes of consumer vehicle tires for the whole month and the drop-off fee is a mere $2 per tire. Tires need to be removed from the rims, please, and rims can go in our scrap metal area.

Our fresh-looking, remodeled and expanded ReShop and ReCycle Community Bike Shop have now reopened, so please come in, enjoy and take a look around. We are excited to have Ken Marshall on board as our new bike mechanic; he will be on-site every Sunday afternoon while the depot is open. Bikes can be dropped off for repair and tune-ups anytime the depot is open, and refurbished bikes will be available for purchase by suggested donation. We are always happy to accept items for donation for the ReShop, Bike Shop and Free Store; please check with staff before leaving items with us.

We want to express our sincere thanks to all our customers for your donations of refundable containers/bottles, this is very important to our depot’s financial health and is highly appreciated. Due to the increasing costs of delivering scrap metal and large plastic/non-packaging plastic items to Vancouver Island and the decreased value of these commodities we are now charging a small fee for larger metal loads and large plastic non-packaging items. For more information or to find out what the charge may be please contact depot staff. Thank you for your understanding.

Spring and early summer is a great time to install a composter and/or food digester. Both are available for sale at our depot at a very reasonable cost. More information is available on our website at www.penderislandrecycling.com. Lately at the depot we have noticed more trailers (pulled behind cars) being used for recycling. We think it is excellent that people do so much recycling, yet it can pose a bit of a logistical parking problem, especially at busier times. If you plan to bring a longer vehicle or car and trailer, it can be helpful to call ahead at 629-6962 so we can plan for your arrival by marking off a suitable spot. Also, a gentle reminder to arrive at the depot at least 15 mins before closing time so you have time to do your recycling and socialize!

Summer will be upon us soon, as you will know by our Summer Hours starting on Friday June 3. The hours will be Tuesdays 8am - 3pm, Fridays and Saturdays 10am-3pm and Sundays 1-4pm, and will be in effect until the end of September. There is an open invitation for all to attend our upcoming AGM on Thursday, May 26 at 7pm in the Community Hall lounge. Everyone is welcome and we would love to see you there, so please consider joining us!
