2016 March Pender Post

You may have noticed that there is some rearranging and remodeling going on at the recycling depot, with some further upgrading happening. We will be re-opening the ReCycle bike shop this spring and we plan to have a space for repurposed building materials, and will continue to operate the FreeStore and ReShop. Please excuse the mess and reorganizing, things will be renewed and improved in no time. We continue to gratefully accept donations, please just check with staff.

With spring set to arrive soon this is a good time to order any backhaul deliveries of soil, manure, mulch or gravel you may need. The wait list is growing, so please book soon. The recycling truck can deliver up to six yards of soil or mulch, or three yards of gravel. This may also be a good time to think about purchasing and installing a composter (available at the depot for $85) or a food digester which also accepts meat, bread and cheese but does not create compost (available for $165).

Daylight Saving Time will be here soon starting on Sunday March 13. We would like to remind you to turn your clocks forward an hour when you go to bed the night before so you won’t miss our open hours on Sunday! This is an excellent time to check smoke detectors, change their batteries and bring us your old batteries and old or non-functioning smoke/CO detectors.

In the past we have been fortunate to have the CRD set up a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day at the depot every other summer, but unfortunately this practice has now been discontinued. Household hazardous waste (HHW) will now have to be taken to Hartland Landfill in Victoria, but the good news is that if you are only dropping of HHW and no regular garbage, there is no entry fee charged. Please be aware that any paint or paint products with their original labels are accepted at our recycling depot, whether they are empty or not. Empty propane cylinders are accepted at Pender Fire Hall 1 (near the Community Hall) during open hours for a small fee. For more information on HHW or other unusual recycling items please see the CRD website MyRecyclopedia.ca.

Some thoughts for spring cleaning: please know that you can bring us your old light bulbs, light fixtures, electronics, CDs, VCR and cassette tapes (even left in cases), small appliances and cell phones, whether in working order or not. Also, we are happy to renew your 2016 membership anytime for $20 at the depot, or online with a credit card via PayPal at penderislandrecycling.com.

The recycling depot will be closed on Easter Sunday, March 27. We would like to wish you happy gardening, some sunny outdoor time and a very Happy Easter.

Anna Herlitz
