2016 February Pender Post

Spring is approaching, and if you are thinking about getting your garden ready, we would like to give a reminder to place any backhaul orders for delivery of soil, manure, gravel or other landscaping materials from Saanich. Right now there is no wait list, but if prior years are reliable indicators then it is likely to grow soon. This is also the time of year we ask our supporters to renew their annual PIRS membership for just $20, either at the depot or online at PenderIslandRecycling.com. A charitable tax donation receipt is available upon request at the depot, but is generated automatically with an online renewal. Our website also has more information on backhaul delivery.

We have been working on ways to make the depot more user-friendly, especially for those with mobility issues. You may have noticed that we have added a couple of tables for placing your bins on while sorting recyclables. We welcome any feedback and suggestions on how to improve your recycling experience at the depot, and please don’t hesitate to ask for assistance from staff.

We really appreciate the cleanliness of recyclables brought to the depot as it keeps smells and pests at bay. One item that appears to be difficult to clean is the Styrofoam/polystyrene meat trays, especially the black ones, which we have found to attract animals who nibble at them and literally eat the polystyrene. We are doing our best to keep this polystyrene out of the food chain by covering it up at night, and we very much appreciate your efforts to bring only clean polystyrene, without any juice-soaked sponge or shrink-wrap. Thank you for your help. An ingenious use for the larger Styrofoam trays was shared with us by a customer who made insoles for his boots out of them. Excellent!

In prior years the CRD has held a bi-annual Household Hazardous Waste drop-off day at the depot in the summertime, but unfortunately they have decided that they can no longer continue to hold this event. Any household hazardous waste items will have to be taken directly to Hartland Landfill instead where drop-off is free.

We want to wish everyone a happy Valentine’s Day! Perhaps you could use your creative juices to make a homemade gift for a special person in your life? There is so much inspiring talent and ingenuity on this island; yet another reason that they’re all good days on Pender!
