2015 August Pender Post

The Fall Fair is coming up soon and PIRS would like to invite and encourage you to enter a recycled creation in the Fall Fair’s Section R, Recycling. Let your imagination guide you, and show the world how fun, beautiful or useful it can be to reuse and recycle. There are two divisions in Section R: the Youth Division for age 12 and under, and the Individual/Family Division for age 13 and up (can be younger if part of a family entry). For both divisions the requirement of entries is “An artistic or functional creation: reuses materials to create something visually appealing or that is useful and serves a function. All entries must be made using recycled materials.” The top three entries in each division are awarded prize money, and the best overall submission will receive the Karl Hamson Recycling Trophy. The Fall Fair guide on page 63 shows the details. We are looking forward to seeing your creative submissions displayed at the Fall Fair!

Fall Fair organizers and PIRS staff and board members are continuing to work towards making the Fall Fair a garbage-free event, and each year we get a little closer. We hope you will bring your water bottle which can be refilled at the Fair’s water stations, and we encourage you to recycle or compost any plates, cups or food leftovers after enjoying your lunch or treats at the Fair. PIRS staff will be manning the recycling, compost and garbage stations to assist with sorting.

The very popular Imagination Station at the Fall Fair is run by PIRS volunteers, and can use a few more people to help on Fair day. If you like building things and you like kids (and don’t mind a bit of hammering noise), this might be a great opportunity for you to help some young folks create some imaginative items. Please contact PIRS President Davy Rippner if you are interested.

We would like to offer a huge thank you to the late Robert Friesen for his very generous bequeathal to PIRS. We are very grateful for such thoughtfulness and will work hard to continue to provide recycling and re-use services on the Penders.

We know that sorting recyclables at our depot is not always a simple or easy task, especially for those with physical limitations or mobility restrictions. If you find this difficult at the depot please ask a staff member for assistance and we will be happy to help. Also, for any questions such as where to recycle what, please ask any staff member.

When bringing items for our Free Store or ReShop, please check with us before dropping it off. We also ask that you remember to support the NuToYu with any donations that they will accept. Wasp season seems to be in full swing; we thank you for being diligent with cleaning your recyclables.

Lastly, a brief reminder that we accept electronics, appliances, power tools, aerosol containers, spiral-wound cardboard containers and paint cans with labels on. We also have partially full containers of paint available for re-use.

We hope that you are enjoying this fabulous summer weather. They are indeed all good days on Pender!

Anna Herlitz
