2015 November Pender Post
It looks and feels like Fall is here, and so are the depot’s Fall & Winter hours, which are in effect until the end of May: Tuesdays 8am-3pm, Saturdays 10am-3pm and Sundays 1-4pm. With Fall comes plans for things like making creative gifts for the holidays, baking pies, dehydrating apple rings and creating homemade cards. We wish you lots of time for making gifts and also hope you will mark the dates for the local Christmas Craft Fairs to support the artisans, bakers and other makers who produce gift items right here on the Penders. Shopping locally helps both the environment and our island economy.
For those who will be hosting a Grey Cup party or other event, please be aware that our Dish Shed has items available for use such as plates, cutlery, cups, glasses, bowls and napkins, all just for a small donation. It is a service we provide as a more environmentally friendly choice than using disposable items, and it is also a less expensive option. To reserve dishes please ask a staff member or call us during open hours at 250-629-6962. Many of you bring your party refundable beverage containers to the depot as a donation and we are very grateful for that. It is one of the many forms of revenue which helps us stay in operation.
After such a sunny summer we took a look at our solar panel webpage to check how much energy the solar panels have generated and found it to be quite impressive. Since the solar panel array was installed in April it has generated 8.1 megawatts of energy, which according to Enphase Energy offsets approximately 5.7 metric tons of carbon dioxide. This CO2 offset is the equivalent to planting 147 trees! We want to again extend a big Thank You to Pender Solar Initiative 2020 and the NuToYu for making this happen. To read more about our photovoltaic solar panel system and energy generation please see our website at www.penderislandrecycling.com.
We want to thank everyone for arriving at the depot earlier than 15 minutes before closing so we can avoid any extra costs of staying open late. Also, we are still looking for a couple of interested individuals to serve on our PIRS Board of Directors. Please contact us if you are curious to know more about the position. It is one more way to be involved in protecting the environment and working towards a sustainable future.
We hope you will stop in at our ReShop and Free Store and find some useful items or just some parts and inspiration for new creations. There are always new curiosity items coming in and going out. The staff at the depot is always interested in hearing about the innovative ways that islanders are repurposing and reinventing uses for things, so please continue to share your ideas, plans and creations with us.
Innovative thinkers and problem-solvers, yet more reasons that they’re all good days on Pender.
